Karpov claimed after he lost the match that Kasparov had cheated by doing this.

But now its common practice for all great chess players to study other chess players games. 

So is Kasparov now doing anything sensual here. NO and YES. while others do study there opponents games like Kasparov what isn't said is the fact that Kasparov is not a 1 man band like we all thing. It leaked out in a newspaper article many years ago about the fact that Kasparov employs a team of analyses who study openings while Kasparov is away on tour. When Kasparov as free time he is given opening lines that lead to solid positions where Kasparov as a slight advantage to play from. Then apparently he as a debate about the new findings. So while all other chess players are adding to there personal opening chess book Kasparov as a team helping him. Most don't even know this.

Its also been said that many chess players have experimented with memory tablets but that's all I think we here. There's no proof any champion as taken them. They just don't talk about such things. But this isn't to say that they don't take supplements to help there mental abilities. Interesting thought.

But over all Kasparov isn't at the top because of a few twists and tricks. He is the best because of a life times of study and deep understanding of chess. Kasparov is a master of understanding the finer qualities of a chess position. He knows how to make his opponents struggle. And I believe life Fischer he as contributed to chess in a big way by becoming known and thus advertising the chess sport. There for which ever way they got there I congratulate them.
